What Is Generative Engine Optimization for a Local Business?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) for a local business is the work of making your company easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers to find, check and recommend. In practice it means the same business facts everywhere, steady genuine reviews, pages that answer questions directly, and mentions on sites those tools already trust.

Why does this matter for a local business now?

Because customers have started asking AI tools for recommendations. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults, 45% said they had used ChatGPT or another AI tool to find a local business recommendation, up from 6% the year before.

An AI answer usually names a handful of businesses rather than showing ten links. If yours is not one of them, the customer may never see your website at all.

How do AI assistants choose which businesses to recommend?

They answer from what they can find and cross-check: your website, your Google Business Profile and other listings, reviews, and articles or directories that mention you. When those sources agree, the business is easier to describe confidently. When the address, hours or services differ from one profile to the next, it is harder.

Google describes its own local ranking in three words: relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes reviews and how widely a business is known online. Those same signals shape the material AI tools draw on.

How is GEO different from local SEO?

Most of the work overlaps. The table shows where the emphasis shifts.

Do you need an llms.txt file or special schema?

Not for Google. Its guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no special schema to add and no AI text files to create. Normal SEO fundamentals still apply.

Structured data that matches your visible page is still worth having, because it states your business details plainly. An llms.txt file does no harm, and this site has one, but nobody should sell it to you as the thing that gets you recommended.

What should a local business do first?

Start with the parts that cost little and that every AI tool can check:

  • Make your name, address, phone number, hours and services identical on your website, Google, Apple Maps, Bing and the main directories.
  • Complete your Google Business Profile, with the right categories and real photos.
  • Ask finished customers for reviews in the ways your industry and regulator allow.
  • Rewrite your most important pages so each question heading is followed by a direct answer of 40 to 60 words.
  • Earn honest mentions: local news, industry directories and "best [service] in [city]" articles that list businesses on merit.

How do you measure it?

Write ten questions a customer in your city would ask, such as who to call for water damage or which clinic to see for back pain. Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on the same day each month, and record which businesses are named and which sources are cited. The trend tells you more than any single answer.

Common Questions

It grows out of SEO and shares most of its foundations. Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI Overviews beyond normal SEO. The difference for a local business is emphasis: consistent details across every profile, short quotable answers, and mentions on the sites AI assistants already read.
